Local eats: Fine dining
You can’t come to Singapore without trying the local street food (like chicken rice at Tian Tian Chicken Rice and laksa at Sungei Road Laksa) or the city’s unofficial national dish of chilli crab at famed local eateries like Long Beach Seafood Restaurant and No Signboard Seafood Restaurant.
But it’s the fine dining scene that has seized the international spotlight over the past years. Thanks to outposts by big-name chefs like Joel Robuchon, Daniel Boulud, Wolfgang Puck and Tetsuya Wakuda, the little red dot has sprung onto the dining radar -- though you will have to shell out S$300-500 (US$222-370) per head for a multi-course meal.
In the 2015 edition of the San Pellegrino Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, 10 restaurants in the lion city made the list, giving Singapore the status of Asia’s best-awarded dining city.
Whilst celebrity chef outposts like Osteria Mozza (No. 45 on Asia’s 50 Best) and Waku Ghin (No. 9 on Asia’s 50 Best) are featured on the list, it’s the boutique fine diners like Restaurant Andre (No. 5 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list) and Jaan (No. 11 on Asia’s 50 Best) that are blazing the fine dining trail.
If you prefer to go off the beaten track, make a reservation at the newer venues like Corner House and Sorrel where the fare is equally refined, the service deft and the tab a tad more affordable.
